Monkeying Around

Last week was Teacher Appreciation Week, otherwise known as Carbo-Fatta-Licous Fest 2010. In addition to getting chocolate bars in my mailbox from the student government and a tasty breakfast care of the Parent Faculty Organization, I also had the opportunity to indulge in an ice cream sundae bar set up by the senior class. After hacking my way through about a hundred college essays last fall, I think the sundae bar was well deserved. And to the superintendent, nothing truly says "I appreciate you" like a ruler with a built-in calculator. Really. I think it's cool. I have no idea when I will use it, but it is in the top drawer of my desk just waiting for that teachable moment.

Of course, I got so caught up in being appreciated at work that I forgot about my own kids' teachers. Fortunately, and with the help of a healthy breakfast, I was able to get out one day last week and get each of them a gift certificate for a manicure. (By the way, men and parents out there, this is all that any female ever truly wants. Except of course for a ruler with a built-in calculator. And a sundae bar. With crushed Oreos.) In addition to this, I commissioned the help of both Nicholas and Owen to make monkey bread for their teachers. This recipe is about as easy and kid-friendly as it gets. I said kid-friendly, not figure friendly. To make monkey bread, one needs two cans of Pillsbury buttermilk biscuits (on sale at Shop Rite!), 1 cup of white sugar, 3/4 cup of brown sugar, 1 1/2 tablespoons of cinnamon, and 1 1/2 sticks of butter. That's all you need. That and a workout afterward, obviously. Note that in the absence of your own personal trainer, I can drop Nicholas at your home at any time free of charge and he will give you a workout for free.
